So many korean beauty products. So many skin types…
For every 100 people, there might be 100 different skin types. And there also might be 100 Korean beauty products for your skin type. How to decide which is right for you?
The key for choosing the perfect korean beauty products for your skin type is to find the right oil and moisture balance.
Dryness, facial shine, sebum, and rash… When the oil and moisture balance is managed well, most skin concerns vanish. So, in this post, I put together a guide for choosing the right korean beauty products based on skin type. We will help you choose the best for balancing each one.
Before that, if you want to know your skin type, do a skin type test.
Let’s get started!
The Vicious Cycle of choosing the wrong skincare products
Finding the right Moisture-Oil Balance
Moisturizing your skin is more than just replenishing moisture. You also need to strike a balance between moisture and oil.
The outer part of the skin’s protective material has both water-loving and oil-loving properties.
Over using oily products on dry skin can clog pores, which can actually make your dry skin worse. If you use only moisturizing products, your skin will release more oil, increase sebum and cause problems such as secondary troubles and acne.
You need to balance water and oil in order for your skin to feel comfortable.
Korean Beauty Products for your skin type
Moisture 5: Oil 5
First, you need to moisturize. Apply plenty of water-based products to let your skin absorb the moisture. Next, you need to seal in all that moisture. Use a cream with an oily feel. This will create a protective coating for sealing in all that moisture.
You may also exfoliate gently once a week. After exfoliating, use a moisturizing, soothing mask pack.
Moisture 7: Oil 3
True or false: having oily skin means you don’t need products with oil. False! So yes, you need products with more moisture, but you still need to balance! After washing your face, most of your sebum is washed away. After applying a moisturizer, a product with light oil will prevent your moisture from leaving your face. Because you have oily skin already, you only need to use a light cream or a product that is light on the oily side.
You can exfoliate softly twice a week. After exfoliating, finish things up with a gel-type moisturizing and soothing sheet mask.
Dry, flushed skin
Moisture 5: Oil 5 + skin barrier strengthening/soothing product
Flushed skin is caused by heat. This leads to skin dryness and gradual breakdown of your skin’s protective barrier. You can prevent this using creams that strengthen your skin barrier. The moisture can be replenished with a functional ampoule or serum with ingredients such as EGF, hyaluronic acid, ceramide, and peptide.
Avoid exfoliation! Until your skin is no longer flushed, this step is best skipped. Use a gel-type moisturizing, soothing sheet mask that can be applied 3-4 times a week.

Oily skin with acne
Moisture 7: Oil 3 + Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory products
For acne, skin hygiene is paramount. Acne-causing bacteria can be stopped with a little help from functional cosmetics. You will need to focus on products with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Use ampoules or essences with ingredients such as centella asiatica, bamboo, EGF, and heartleaf philodendron. These will fight acne as well as replenish moisture. Finish with creams having the same ingredients.
Exfoliate gently twice a week. After exfoliating, finish with a gel-type moisturizing and soothing mask sheet.
Eczema (red, itchy, flaky) skin
Moisture 4: Oil 6
Eczema is a condition that makes your skin red and itchy. It is caused by a shortage of your skin’s oil, which damages your skin barrier. Usually produces red, itchy and inflamed skin. While there is no cure, it can certainly be drastically improved with some skin care.
Like the other skin types, moisture and oil balance is the key. But with eczema, it is also important to select functional korean beauty products. Since most creams contain some degree of oil, you don’t need to worry as much about finding an oily cream. It is more important to find a cream with naturally protective ingredients.
It is not recommended to exfoliate or use mask packs until eczema improves.
Acne skin with flushed skin
Moisture 7: Oil 3 + skin barrier strengthening. And then soothing products.
Redness and acne are difficult to treat at the same time. Flushed skin is caused by a weak skin barrier. This is difficult because the products designed to fight acne will also cause irritation to the skin barrier. So the strategy? Before fighting the acne, try building up your skin barrier. Do this until the redness goes away. You may find that the acne will naturally soon follow. If it doesn’t, then you can use products more in line with fighting acne.
Select protective, soothing, and moisturizing products for building your skin barrier.
Softly use a very mild exfoliator just once a week. After exfoliation, use a gel-type moisturizing and soothing mask pack.
After your redness has disappeared, then use some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory products to knock out the rest of the acne.
